“When I dance, my heart feels full!” – Annie Cushman

The Ann Johnston Honours award recipient for 2018 was Annie Cushman, who was selected by the teachers and staff at Dance 1.  In 2018, Francesca Stern, began the awards program as a commemoration to her mother, Ann Johnston.  Dance was a major part of her life and we know she would be proud of all of the dancers, especially awardee Annie.

The award was announced at the Winter Show on December 9.  Students gathered around in anticipation for the announcement and when Annie’s name rang through the theater, dancers were so supportive and proud of their fellow dancer.  Audience felt the rush of excitement at this moment and students themselves rushed the stage to celebrate with Annie.

Dancers of all ages submitted video of themselves explaining what dance means to them.  Many young dancers, including members of Redondo Ballet Company submitted their application describing all the meaningful ways dance changes their lives.

Annie described dance as transcendent saying, “I enter a world where I have no other intruding thoughts, I can just let myself go and give myself over to the music.”  As a serious dancer, she practices every day, feeling healthy. “When your body feels good, your mind does too!”
